Panel discussion: Effects of the Current Geopolitical Situation on Science and VU Amsterdam
Date: 3 July 2025 @ 12:00 - 13:30
Timezone: Amsterdam
This event will take place at Theater 3 in the NU Building
Recent global political shifts have raised concerns about the vulnerability of scientific research — particularly in certain fields of science. The pace and intensity of these developments mean that years of carefully collected research data and careers are at stake. How can we build a resilient infrastructure for open science in the face of growing political pressures and threats to open data?
In this panel, researchers from VU Amsterdam will be joined by a data professionals and policy advisors to discuss the effect of the current geopolitical situation on science and VU Amsterdam. Together, we’ll explore safeguarding data, ensuring academic freedom and strengthen the infrastructure that supports open, transparent, and inclusive research.

Claudia Behnke is Manager Research Developer at SURF, ensuring researchers have access to the tools and expertise they need to advance scientific discovery. Under Claudia’s guidance multiple teams within SURF keep SURFdrive, ResearchDrive, Snellius and the HPC Cloud in general top of the line in safe and responsible research storage, analysis and processing. Claudia is actively engaged in European initiatives, including serving as co-chair of EUDAT, where she contributes to shaping collaborative solutions for data infrastructure across Europe.
Dr. Jens de Bruijn is an assistant professor at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM). He works on the DYNAMO global agent-based model which simulates adaptation and migration decisions of the coastal population in response to sea level rise. Jens holds a doctoral degree on the analysis of disaster-related social media, flood detection and disaster response. In this role, he also developed the Global Flood Monitor. On top of his research is Jens first line respondent on all research data management questions of his peers as faculty data steward.

What to expect?
Data Conversations will feature short talks from researchers or colleagues who support research. There will be a joint Q&A after the talks. Don't miss the free lunch at the beginning of the event! Those who are willing to stay longer than an hour are welcome to continue discussion and networking after the presentations. Use the registration form at the bottom to indicate your dietary restrictions.
Who should attend?
Data Conversations brings together researchers, research support staff and data management and data science experts from all subject areas. Early career researchers, as well as experienced academics, are welcome to attend.
About Data Conversations
Data Conversations started at the University of Lancaster in the UK. The Lancaster Data Conversations aim to bring data practitioners together to talk about how researchers create, collect, use and share data. The Data Conversations at the VU Amsterdam share the same aim and are intended to provide a forum for researchers from different subjects and disciplines to exchange practices and ideas around open data, FAIR data, research data management and related open science topics.
Call for Talks
You can attend and benefit from your colleagues' experiences or come and present your own experiences. We welcome short talks on topics related to Open Science and Reproducible Research from early career researchers as well as from more experienced academics and research support staff. This is an informal and inclusive event, so whether you are a seasoned presenter or a first-timer, your contribution will be welcome.
